Pandemic Staycations (England)

I haven’t been here for a long time. Corona happened, of course. Everything went off balance. I still remember being in Istanbul in February 2020 and seeing things on the news about flights being cancelled across the world, and worrying in case our own flight back home got cancelled. The virus had only just started…

KZ Gedenkstätte Dachau, Munich | Dark Tourism (2013)

A synchronicity occurred in my life yesterday. I was researching unusual places in Germany for a (different) blog I write for, and I fell down an internet hole looking at what’s called ‘dark tourism’ – visiting places associated with death & tragedy. I never realised that this had a name, but I guess I am…

Algeria 2012 & How Instagram Has Changed

Hey! I enjoyed looking back on my 2013/2014 photos from France, including the (now very vintage-looking) Instagram snapshots I’d saved. So, I thought I’d do it again! This time, it’s 2012 and we’re in Algeria. At some point I’ll actually post some *better quality* photos from holidays as well, but at the moment I just…

France 2013/14 Via ‘Vintage’ Instagram Snapshots

In today’s post I bring you: Nice, France, via 2013 and 2014 Instagram snapshots! Instagram has come such a long way in such a short space of time, that even photos from 2013/14 now look like they were taken on an old polaroid camera. This is actually how I liked Instagram the most: Raw, grainy, kinda random, not overly edited. So, let’s revisit that!

Summer Holiday Nostalgia: Nice, Cannes, Monaco 2013

When I opened the door to the conservatory this morning, the heat hit me like crazy and I suddenly had this nostalgic feeling for summer 2013 in Nice, France. Today’s the first day of lockdown where it’s fully hit me that we won’t be going anywhere this year. So the healthiest thing I can do is live vicariously through my old travel photos lolllllllllll.

Vegan Istanbul

On this ‘standard menu’ I put together a load of sides/appetisers: stuffed vine leaves (see above picture), lentil soup with bread, hummus, and a huge salad. There were a few other dishes that were suitable for vegans, too, like a main dish vegetable casserole.

Istanbul 2020 | Topkapi Palace

On our last day in Istanbul we went to Topkapi Palace. I would like to live like this. The rooms are so simple, but the decor is vibrant. Low seating, carpet, no mess, no clutter. Then we got a shuttle bus back to the airport. Istanbul airport is the cleanest, shiniest, most spacious airport I’ve…

Istanbul 2020 | Taksim, Galata Tower, Bill

On our adventures with the tram and metro (which are really pleasant, by the way) we went to Taksim, which is basically the Oxford Street of Istanbul. If you want to go to shops like H&M, Mango, Levis etc., you’ll find them in this area!
There are also lots of modern (‘hipster’) coffee shops in this area, with most of the traditional Turkish places down the side alleys. A totally different vibe to that in Sultanahmet.
